Racial Justice

The unjust killings of George Floyd, Elijah McClain, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black Americans at the hands of police are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to systemic racism in this country. For centuries, the abuse of Black and Brown communities has been cultivated, protected, and at the same time, denied – making it dangerously difficult to achieve change.

During the 2020 Legislative Session, I sponsored SB20-217 which holds police accountable for using excessive force and works to remove bad actors from police forces and ensure that those bad actors are unable to become police officers elsewhere in the state. While preventing unjust police violence against Black Americans is just one part of creating a more equitable America for people of all colors, I was proud to sponsor this bill to take a step in the right direction for justice in Colorado.

In coming legislative sessions, I look forward to working on other legislation that removes the societal barriers that have oppressed people of color since America’s inception. As your Senator, I will continue to stand up for policies that end structural inequalities in society. From protecting voting rights to expanding economic opportunity, Colorado and America still have work to do to ensure that every person has the same chances to succeed regardless of the color of their skin.
